Goal Setting: How to Cut Through The Bullshit

We’ve heard them all.

  • SMART Goals

  • OKR Goals

  • EFQM Goals

  • BHAG

  • Golden Circle

  • AND MORE!

You may have even tried them all. This writer has done at least three from the list above, yet questioned if she was making any progress as the “time requirement” went on. At yours, we focus on the goal itself and align on the proper process rather than sticking to a framework that may not be suitable to either the goal or you. So when you are setting a goal, here are a few things you should keep in mind.

Not interested in keeping yourself accountable for your goal? That’s cool, we get it. Schedule a FREE intro call, share your goal and together we’ll make a plan and I will help keep you accountable.

1. WTF do you want?

Goals should be very clear. If you think what you want is clear, re-write it with more precision. I bet you’ll be able to.

Example: I WANT to find a new job.

The example above sucks. It’s not clear. When will you find a new job. You need a deadline. What kind of job do you want? Are you looking to make a career shift? Or do you just want to move to another company with a better benefit package? The clearer you can visualize what you WANT the better.

2. How will you get it?

Usually, this is where we are starting when I coach my clients (though you don’t have to have #1 accomplished to start). Most of the time people know what they want thy just need a little incentive to figure out how to get it.
